Intensive rain-fed systems

Rainfed production systems in the Dry Areas of the world are constrained by land degradation, nutrient deficiencies, and increasing water scarcity.

In North Africa and West Asia, Dryland Systems is operating in areas where wheat-based cropping systems are prevalent and horticulture is intensifiable and market-oriented; in East and Southern Africa mixed crop-livestock systems are the main focus of study; in South Asia it is crop and livestock-based rainfed production systems with the potential for system intensification and improved market linkages; and in the West African Sahel and Dry savannas scientists are enhancing the productivity of intensified cotton-cereal or cereal-legume based systems.
