Role in Dryland Systems:
Position in home organization:
Dr. Vinay Nangia is an agricultural hydrologist with research experience on a wide range of issues relating to agricultural water resource management and environmental impact assessment.
He holds a PhD in field of water resources science and MSc in field of biosystems & agricultural engineering from University of Minnesota, USA.
He is a core member of team of researchers assessing water-use efficiency, crop production function analysis, irrigation and drainage performance diagnoses, evaluation of water saving/conservation options,
He has 45 scientific publications. He maintains links with education, serving as academic advisor to graduate students, conducting workshops and serving on editorial boards of reputed science publications.
Since July, 2011, He is serving as agricultural hydrologist and capacity building coordinator in the Integrated Water & Land Management Program of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Amman, Jordan.
He began his career in 2005 as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at IWMI, Sri Lanka; then moved to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, studying greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. He has worked in several large river basins, conducting research on irrigation and drainage management, GIS applications in hydrology and other areas. Dr Nangia was also Visiting Assistant Professor at the Institute of Soil and Water Conservation of the Chinese Academy of Science (2007-2011).
He has served as a PI or co-PI on research projects worth about $5.75 Million, authored or co-authored 59 technical publications that include 20 refereed journal articles in international journals. Dr. Nangia is an internationally recognized authority in hydrologic and water quality modeling and GIS applications in water resources management. He has offered more than 20 trainings (covering a total of 400 participants) on hydrologic modeling in 10 countries. Dr. Nangia serves on the editorial board of three professional society journals. Dr. Nangia has served as a research advisor/committee member to 4 M.S and 5 Ph.D. students.
He is a recipient of several awards and honors, such as 2014 Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin (AASIO) and 2006 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Gujarat Agriculture University.
His current research emphasizes on (1) the measurement, modeling, and management of uncertainty and risk for non-point source pollution of surface and groundwater; (2) the evaluation of alternative farm management strategies for improved water quality and sustainability; (3) evaluation of policies for soil and water resources (4) irrigation and drainage performance diagnoses; and (5) valuation of ecosystem services.
