Dr Jeffrey Herrick is a soil scientist, with 30 years of experience in rangeland ecology and management, knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation, and the science-policy interface. He holds a PhD in Agronomy from Ohio State University (USA), a Diploma in Agricultural Science from Lincoln University (New Zealand) and a BA in Biology from Swarthmore College (USA).

Dr. Herrick has worked for the past 20 years as a soil scientist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service on a broad range of topics. During this time, he led the development and national implementation of a standardized rangeland monitoring protocols, co-led the development and national implementation of a standardized rangeland assessment protocol. He serves on UNEP’s International Resource Panel, as an advisor to US land management agencies, and as the US science representative to the UNCCD. He has collaborated with scientists and land managers in over 20 countries and is currently working in Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia and Namibia, in addition to the US, and currently leads the global Land-Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS) project.

Dr. Herrick has authored and co-authored approximately 100 peer-reviewed journal publications, and over 60 books, book chapters and conference proceedings. He is an active member of several scientific and professional associations, including the Soil Science Society of America, Ecological Society of America, and the Society for Range Management. He was a Fulbright scholar and is the recipient of several awards and honors, including Fellow and Outstanding Achievement Awards for both Research and Stewardship (Society for Range Management), and the Secretary of Agriculture’s Honor Award.

His current research interests focus on the development of a global system for collecting, integrating and sharing local and scientific knowledge to increase sustainability and productivity using mobile apps and cloud computing. He is also continuing long-term research on factors controlling resilience in dryland ecosystems.
